Summer is here and Beautycounter launched 2 new sun care products this week.
The first is another mist. But unlike our original mist, this one has a tint to it. Countersun Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Mist has an SPF 30 and comes in Light-Medium and Medium-Deep. Formulated with non-nano zinc oxide and California poppy extract, this physical SPF 30 formula provides an effective shield from UVA and UVB rays while the tint helps camouflage imperfections and even out skin tone. It’s reef safe, but be careful where you spray because the color will transfer.
The Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Mist is like Dew Skin… for your body! Forbes included Beautycounter’s new Countersun Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Mist as one of their “must-have” clean sunscreen brands for year-round protection. Read the full article here!

Whether you have fair skin and would love a little tint while you wear your sunscreen and a sleeveless top (like me), or you have a darker skin tone and would love a sunscreen that complements your skin, this new mist is for you.
I can see using and loving this product while on vacation where I will apply lots of sunscreen but typically don’t end up getting much color because I stay out of the sun as much as I can. This way I will look sun-kissed even before stepping into the sun!
Is it a self-tanner? No. This product is more like “light body makeup” but primarily an SPF. It will only leave color deposited on your skin until you wash it off. So, even if your application isn’t perfect, it won’t be “stuck” with you for a week.
When applying the Countersun tinted mist, I recommend spraying into the palm of your hand before quickly rubbing it onto your skin. This formula is not greasy and tends to dry/absorb very quickly. Note that, like makeup the color can transfer to light-colored clothing and towels. It will wash off when your items are laundered. I recommend using this product while wearing medium to darker colored swimsuits, clothing, and towels. Wash your hands after applying.
Also new is the Countersun After Sun Cooling Gel. This lightweight after-sun gel cools on contact to help soothe skin post-sun exposure while boosting hydration. The Monoi scent is like a vacation in a bottle. It smells like summer in the 70s to me. If you’re in the sun a lot, this is a great one to add to your beach or pool bag!

Chemical sunscreen has been in the news lately, and not in a good way. It seems mainstream media and data are finally catching up to what we in the safer skincare and alternative health arenas have known for quite some time: chemical sunscreens are not safe.
A recent Consumer Reports article states that:
“The researchers, whose work was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that using [chemical] sunscreen the correct way for just one day (applying about 1 ounce every 2 hours when in the sun) increased the amount of four chemical sunscreen ingredients—avobenzone, ecamsule, octocrylene, and oxybenzone—in the bloodstream to levels the agency says triggers the need for more testing, potentially raising concerns.”
While we wait for mainstream media to catch up, we know that when these toxins accumulate in our bodies, we are at risk.
Oxybenzone in particular is on Beautycounter’s The Never List (TM) due to its links to endocrine (hormone) disruption potential among other issues. According to the EWG, “Oxybenzone is a sunscreen ingredient associated with photoallergic reactions. This chemical absorbs through the skin in significant amounts. It contaminates the bodies of 97% of Americans according to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
To read even more about the trouble with ingredients in chemical sunscreens, check out the EWG’s article.
And I haven’t even touched on what oxybenzone does to our oceans… it kills coral! You may recall that oxybenzone has now been banned in Hawaii and in Key West for this reason. Mineral sunscreen does not have this harmful effect on coral reefs!
So, what should we use instead of chemical sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreen! Preferably, zinc based.
IMPORTANT NOTES & TIPS ABOUT USING MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREEN
1. Application must be visible.
Whether you’re using our traditional sheer-white formula or a tinted formula, neither is a “clear mist” that will work if you don’t see where it applied. While the sheer-white formula won’t remain a thick white layer on your skin, you should see where you applied it at least initially.

2. You must re-apply.
As with any sunscreen, re-apply regularly according to the package details. Sunscreen does not work all day, so re-apply about once an hour while in direct sun or after swimming.
3. Shake the container before use.
Zinc can settle in the container, and will, therefore, concentrate in some parts of the product. Simply shake the container before each use to ensure the mineral is well distributed. Zinc is your active “blocking” agent, so you want to be sure it’s in each application evenly.
4. Zinc as a protective agent does not expire!
While all sunscreens are required by law to list an expiration date, the mineral (your protective agent) never expires. So, even if your Countersun stash lasts longer than you expected (even since last summer), you can definitely use it safely when the above notes are followed for application and use.
Our Beautycounter sunscreens work beautifully, but please not that user-error is the #1 reason why someone can burn when using any sunscreen. Don’t underestimate the power of the sun! Even on an overcast day. If you are exposed to the sun, apply your safer sunscreen! You don’t have to use Beautycounter but please do use a safe and clean brand such as Badger or Goddess Garden or California Baby.
